Title of the Conference
Example of a Theatre Laboratory in School
Date of the conference:
9 November 2018
Place of the conference:
Grosseto, Italy
Description of the conference:
Alessandro Gatto, general manager, theatre director and senior trainer from “Teatro Stabile di Grosseto” conducted the day presenting the OFF-Book project. OFF-book offers a great opportunity for changing school systems patterns through theatrical means, thus making the relationship between teachers and students less formal and “distant”. Teachers are no longer “presenting” notions to students but actively cooperate with students on a shared learning process. This process improves the students' perception of the value of school attendance. Through the use of Theatrical Laboratories, teachers become facilitators in developing students' transversal skills. The innovative character of OFF-BOOK is therefore represented by a balanced mix of elements and expertise derived from, on the one hand, educational sciences, such as those related to the use of non formal educational tools and the necessary connections between formal and non formal educational environments, and those related to non discrimination and human rights education; on the other, civil society institutions with a specific expertise in drama school programs.

Examples of Theatrical Laboratory activities were made by Alessandro Gatto focusing on:
  • Deconstructing the "judgmental" logic, feared by teenagers, through meetings whose aim is to facilitate dialogue, teach how to listen to others, set the group in action
  • Deconstructing the “judgemental” approach to education
